All the below costs are based on training in the Robinson R22 Helicopter.
In order to gain a PPL(H) there are certain minimal requirements and tests you must pass.
These Are:
45 Hours Of flight time; Of which...
10 Hours must be solo Flight time
and
5 Hours must be Instrument Flight Training
You must pass 7 Ground Exams:
Air law and operational procedures
Aircraft General Knowledge and Principles of Flight
Flight Performance and Planning
Navigation and Radio Aids
Meteorology
Human Performance and Limitations
Radio Telephony
You must also pass a flight test at the end of your training with an examiner.
But before you begin you should get you JAA Class 2 medical as if you fail
to pass this then you will not be able to fly solo.
The Cost
The costs involved in learning to fly a helicopter can seem scary at first
but are attainable to the majority of people if they want to.
First the minimums, if you manage to complete the training in the minimums
it will cost you £13767.05.
This is made up of: 10 Hours Of Solo Flight Time at £190 per Hour
35 Hours of Dual Flight time at £252.63 per Hour
45 Hours of Ground instruction at £45 per Hour
After this you will have books, your medical and Flight test which will
come to approximately £1000.
A more realistic example of what it will cost is £20000.
This is made up of:
10 Hours of Solo Flight Time at £190 per Hour
60 Hours of Dual Flight time at £252.63 per Hour
60 Hours of Ground instruction at £45 per Hour
Again you will have books, your medical and flight test which will come
to approximately £1000.
Please Note that most students complete their training in 60-70 hours, the
example above is for the higher end of the scale therefore most students
will complete the training costing less that that.
